Activity ideas for Family Day —and a history of why we celebrate it
Family Day is a statutory holiday designed to promote work-life balance by giving people time off work to spend with their families. It’s an opportunity to spend quality time together, engage in fun activities, and create lasting memories. And let’s face it, everyone enjoys a long weekend during the deepest and darkest days of winter!
The date of Family Day varies by province, but in Ontario it’s typically observed on the third Monday in February. In 2025, Family Day in Ontario is on Monday, February 17th.
There’s a wide variety of outdoor sports and events you can join in winter, but if there isn’t much snow (or frigid temperatures where you live), we’ve also listed indoor activity ideas! Here’s a list of things to do on Family Day weekend in Ontario:
Bundle up and grab your sled for a classic favourite that brings joy to all ages! Refer to this guide to tobogganing in Ontario to find top spots and tips on what to bring along for a fun and safe day.
Glide through winter at Ontario’s family-friendly ice skating rinks and trails. Whether in Toronto, Ottawa, or smaller towns, you’ll find great options for skating and rental facilities.
Head out and experience crisp winter air by exploring some of Ontario's most scenic parks. Popular spots include Algonquin Park and Bruce Peninsula National Park, which often offer equipment rentals and guided tours. Be sure to check for updated information and conditions at your chosen park.
Many communities hold festivals, arts and crafts activities, and other family-oriented events. Here are some popular winter festivals in Ontario:
Finish off your day of outdoor fun by warming up with a delicious cup of hot chocolate at a local café or at home!
Venues such as The Factory and LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Vaughan provide climbing structures, slides, and themed play areas that are perfect for young children.
For families looking for educational and interactive experiences, institutions like the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Science North in Sudbury, and the Ontario Science Centre often have special family-oriented programming and workshops.
Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto is a popular destination with interactive exhibits and underwater tunnels. Kids might also enjoy a visit to indoor exhibits at the Toronto Zoo.
The concept of Family Day was first introduced in the province of Alberta in 1990, thanks to the efforts of the Alberta Federation of Labour. Ontario subsequently followed suit in 2008.
Over time, Family Day has become an important part of Canadian culture, providing an occasion for families to come together and enjoy each other's company. For businesses, it’s an opportunity to encourage employees to spend time with loved ones and nurture relationships beyond the workplace. Many businesses and organizations are closed on Family Day so employees can take a break from their regular routines.
So get out there, embrace winter, and have a fun-filled Family Day weekend!
