When is Family Day 2025 in Canada?

Family Day will be observed on Monday, February 17, 2025. As a statutory holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February, it provides Canadians with a welcome break during the long winter months between New Year's Day and Easter.

The History Behind Family Day

Family Day was first introduced in Alberta in 1990 by Premier Don Getty, who recognized the need to emphasize the importance of family values and provide working parents the chance to spend more quality time with their children. 

Since its inception, the holiday has expanded to multiple provinces, though not all celebrate it under the same name. 

The following provinces observe Family Day:

• Alberta
• British Columbia
• New Brunswick
• Ontario
• Saskatchewan
• Manitoba (Louis Riel Day)
• Prince Edward Island (Islander Day)
• Nova Scotia (Heritage Day)

Family Day is not officially observed as a federal holiday, or in Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. For federal workers or Canadians working in these 4 provinces, February 17th 2025will remain a normal working day.
